A Real Somewhere Man

11 Jan

One of my favorite Beatles songs is “Nowhere Man” from their album Rubber Soul. It starts out, “He’s a real nowhere man/living in his nowhere land/making all his nowhere plans/for nobody.” Sound familiar? It always has for me. This timeless song speaks to the plight of humans…seeking happiness and not letting our lives be embalmed by lack of progress.

Perhaps because of my upbringing, education and oh…genes…I hear this song as a call to live fully as a man/husband/son/brother/grandson/friend/professional. I grew up in public schools. I grew up in a social climate that told me “being cool” should be the most important part of my life. Like any kid I was bludgeoned by advertisements, from Super Soakers to “teen comedies” to breakfast cereal to clothing to video games…you get the point and you’ve heard it before.

My goal for this blog is to address an endless list of practicalities and challenges that I face everyday as a man. I don’t mean to be exclusive. Much of what I’ll write about won’t be gender specific. I may write an entry on being a good uncle or brother, or on how to not cut yourself shaving. But, I’ll be writing about everyday questions and stumbling blocks that everyone faces. The thing is, I can’t help but address them as a man because…well…I’m still figuring that out. And I’m not about to start telling women how to be women. Part of being a man is knowing that something like that wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) fly.

Like a big bang, the amount of information available to us through the internet, television, books, et cetera is growing at an unstoppable pace. What worries me is just how easy it is to get lost in the complexity of it all. I hope this blog is seen as a place to find morsels of sanity for everyday men. While their are endless chances to get distracted and lost, their are an equal amount of opportunities to simplify, reform and live fully. It’s all about where you’re looking, or perhaps more so where you aren’t.

Here’s the rest of the song:

He’s as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere Man can you see me at all?

Nowhere Man, don’t worry,
Take your time, don’t hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
lends you a hand!

Doesn’t have a point of view,
Knows not where he’s going to,
Isn’t he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere Man please listen,
you don’t know what you’re missing
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command!

Sounds good to me. You? Let’s be Somewhere Men.

Thanks for reading. I hope you find this blog helpful. If it ever isn’t, I want to know.

Yours,

Tim
